IRMA LIVE: Hurricane hits Caribbean - buildings destroyed and streets flooded




All the latest updates as the category five storm roars across the Caribbean on a path towards Florida.

British Oversees Territories affected by the hurricane:
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office says the following four oversees territories are likely to be affected by Irma: Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Bermuda is not currently thought to be in the path of the storm.
The FCO is currently telling British nationals caught in the hurricane to follow the advice of the local authorities and any evacuation orders.

St Barts weather station destroyed by Irma:
The weather office on the island measured winds of 151mph (244kph) as the hurricane approached.
But the station said its monitoring equipment had now been destroyed by the storm. 

Government buildings destroyed on St Martin:
French interior minister Gerard Collomb says the government's buildings on the islands - the most sturdy there - have been destroyed.
"We know that the four most solid buildings on the island have been destroyed which means that more rustic structures have probably been completely or partially destroyed," he told reporters. 

St Martin is in the eye of Hurricane Irma:
The US National Hurricane Centre says the eye of the storm is passing over the Caribbean island of St Martin. 

Fuel shortages in Florida as residents stock up:
Some gas stations in South Florida are running out of fuel ahead of the storm's arrival.
At one gas station in Cooper City the queue was already 50 cars deep by 5:30am.

Irma causes "major damage" says French minister:
French overseas territories minister Annick Girardin says Irma has caused "major damage" on several Caribbean islands.
The storm has already hit the islands of Barbuda, St Barts and St Martins.
"These islands are suffering major impacts," the French weather office said.

Flight disruptions as Caribbean airports close:
British Airways say a flight to Antigua and St Kitts is cancelled today as authorities have told them the airports are closed.
"We have offered all customers due to travel to the Caribbean and Florida in the coming days a range of re-booking options and are keeping our flights to the entire region under review," BA said.
Virgin Atlantic say their flight to Antigua on Thursday is cancelled but all other flights are currently scheduled to operate as normal.
They recommend customers check the status of their flights herebefore travelling to the airport. 
"Any customers booked to travel to, from or through Antigua, Havana and Miami between today and 11th September may rebook their flights to an alternative date or alternative destination travelling on or before 14th October (subject to availability), or receive a full refund," Virgin said.

US President Donald Trump has tweeted about the storm:

People in Florida have been preparing for the storm by stocking up on food and water:
This was the queue at a Costco in North Miami, which ran out of bottled water due to the demand.

Hurricane Irma hits St. Martin and St. Barts:
The storm has now struck the Caribbean islands of St. Martins and St. Barts, the French weather office says.
St. Barts is French-run and St. Martin is divided between France and the Netherlands.

Flooding in St. Martin:
There are reports of flooded streets as Hurricane Irma approaches the island of St. Martin.
The storm is expected to bring high winds and heavy rain to the former Dutch colony, which has a population of around 37,000.

This webcam shows live pictures from the Port de Gustavia on the island of Saint Barthelemy (also known as St. Barts) in the Caribbean.

What's the meaning of the name Irma?
Answer: It's a German name meaning "war goddess". 
The names of hurricanes are chosen by the World Meteorological Organization.
They use a list of male and female names which rotate every six years.

State of Emergency declared in Florida:
President Donald Trump declared states of emergencies in Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Island yesterday, ahead of the hurricane's arrival. 

A new tropical storm has formed in the Gulf of Mexico:
Tropical Storm Katia has maximum sustained winds of 40mph (65kph) but may strengthen over the next two days.
It's expected to stay offshore until Friday morning.
A third storm (Tropical Storm Jose) is further east in the Atlantic and is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday evening.

Pope's plane reroutes due to storm:
Pope Francis was travelling to Columbia from Italy on Wednesday when his plane was forced to change route due to Hurricane Irma.
A Vatican official said the plane had planned to fly over Puerto Rico but will instead shift south and fly over Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad.
The Pope took off from Rome on Wednesday morning to start his five day trip to Columbia, his 20th foreign trip as pontiff.

Sir Richard Branson says he'll be staying on his private island Necker during the hurricane:
"I think man-made climate change is a key factor in the intensity of hurricanes", he tweeted.

Advice to tourists in the Caribbean:
Britons still in the area should follow the advice of local authorities and any evacuation orders, said the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
On Tuesday BA sent an empty aircraft to the region, bringing 326 customers back to the UK, and a Virgin Atlantic flight left Antigua five hours early to avoid the storm.
