Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said he is worried about excessive spending in the transfer market on players who are not world class.
Since taking over at United last summer, Mourinho has spent £89 million on Paul Pogba and £75 million on Romelu Lukaku, as well as buying other players.
But he says he is concerned about the regular excessive spending on players not in the top bracket, per the Press Association (via ESPN.co.uk):
"I always thought the problem is not what you pay for these kind of [top] players, I don't think the problem is what you pay for Pogba, I don't think the problem is going to pay crazy for Neymar.
"I think the problem is with the other group which is a big group because players like Pogba, there is one or two [big] transfers [like that] per transfer window. The other ones are where you have 100 transfers and for me that is the dangerous area of the market.
"Some clubs are paying or they don't buy because they don't accept the numbers that are now ruling the market, or to do it they have to go the same levels and for me that's what worries me a little bit because now we speak about £30 million, £40 million, £50 million in such an easy way."
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spent big in the current transfer market but not necessarily on marquee players.
Per Paul Hirst in The Times, the Sky Blues have paid fees of between £30 million and £54 million on Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Ederson and Bernardo Silva, who have a combined 45 international caps between them.
They have also spent £26.5 million on right-back Danilo, who failed to nail down a first-team spot at Real Madrid.
Conversely, Tottenham Hotspur have yet to make a key signing so far this summer, but Mourinho had nothing but praise for the north London side's strategy.
The Portuguese said he was impressed Spurs have managed to hold on to the core group of key players who have made them such an exciting side of late, per the Press Association (via ESPN.co.uk).
"For me the dimension of their investment is amazing," Mourinho said. "They keep everybody they want to keep. They keep Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld, they keep Eric Dier, they keep everyone they want to keep."
Midfielder Dier has been heavily linked with a move to United in recent weeks with Mourinho eager to find a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, per Jamie Jackson and David Hytner in the Guardian.
Tottenham were always insistent he was not for sale, though, and it seems Mourinho has now given up on the prospect of signing the 23-year-old England international this summer.
